Family therapy is a treatment modality that can be used alone or in combination with other treatment modalities. Family therapy strategies include psychodynamic, structural, strategic, and cognitive-behavioral schools. Family therapy is a form of psychotherapy that directly involves all family members in addition to the “identified patient”—and explicitly attends to the interactions among all family members.
Dear Readers,
Please find below handouts from the Webinar ‘Family Therapy with Clients with Eating Disorders’ from the Castlewood Treatment Centre, Presented by: Christine Schneider, MSW, LCSW
Families can have a significant influence on a person’s mental health. The current most commonly used model for the understanding and treatment of eating disorders is a biomedical one that emphasizes symptom resolution. It’s argued a biopsychosocial model that draws attention to the social environment in which the eating disorder evolves may be a more helpful way of approaching the management of eating disorders especially chronic anorexia. There are many reasons to pay attention to the social context of eating disorder in addition to the generally insufficient effectiveness of biological and/or psychological treatments by themselves. I hope you’ll find the webinar below very helpful in understanding the need for therapy in treating eating disorders.
