The body is often overlooked in the therapeutic process, resulting in an overemphasis on conscious controlled cognitive processing. In this lecture, we will discuss the importance of addressing the body and body image in the treatment of eating disorders and trauma. The goal in body based interventions is to elicit rather than manage difficult emotions, and provide body based skills for processing. This workshop will include discussion of barriers to body connection, list goals for body connection, and focus on body based interventions for both individual and group therapy.
Learning Objectives:
Participants will be able to:
- Summarize research which suggests body based interventions are essential in the treatment of eating disorders, anxiety and trauma.
- Describe 5 treatment goals which can be addressed through body based therapeutic interventions.
- Implements at least 3 body based interventions for clients with eating disorders.
