Welcome 2014

Recent world wide increase in cases of Eating Disorder cases is a serious concern.  The reality is that Eating Disorders are extremely common in Muslim countries, affecting an increasing number of people each year. The statistics are quite dire. There is an enormous lack of knowledge in the community surrounding negative body image and eating disorders. They are not a lifestyle choice, they are not about food and you cannot tell just by looking at someone if they are suffering.

Dear Readers!

I wish You All a Very Happy New

Year!

So It’s 2014- Lets declare  this year to THINK BIG- to think Recovery, Life without an Eating Disorder and to engage in a fight against the Eating Disorder Stigma.

“Beliefs have the power to create and the power to destroy. Human beings have the awesome ability to take any experience of their lives and create a meaning that disempowers them or one that can literally save their lives.” – Tony Robbins

Eating Disorder Awareness week will be here soon- (February 23- March 1, 2014). (I am in a process of learning about methods that I can use to fight Eating Disorder stigma in our lives and in our community). I believe this will be a fantastic opportunity to come together as a society, work together with mosques to bring positive change for people suffering from an eating disorder and negative body image.  Most Importantly the underlying Message this year to Muslim communities  is that Eating Disorders are not a lifestyle choice, they are a mental illness, they are not about diet and weight loss,  not about food and you cannot tell just by looking at someone if they are suffering.

So I’ve challenged myself to spread the word, and here’s a glimpse of what I’ve come up with…

“Create awareness with mosques about what eating disorders are”

” Encourage Muslim communities to Fight Eating Disorders till they are history” (Inshallah)

“Start the awareness campaign for the National ED Awareness Week, covering all mosques in the UK to help fight the stigma attached to Eating Disorders in the Muslim world.”

Sometimes, I forget to thank the people who make my life so happy in so many ways. Sometimes, I forget to tell them how much I really do appreciate them for being an important part of my life.
