The field of phenomenology proposes that we experience our body as both subject and object. In the subjective (or lived body) experience we act, live, work and play without awareness of our body. In the object (or corporeal) experience we are aware that we “have a body” and may experience it as wounded, deficient or shameful. This objective experience of the body is particularly influential in body related disorders such as anorexia, bulimia and body dysmorphia when shame and the objective experience of the body cause sufferers to experience body hatred. We suggest that a powerful intervention for body hatred comes from an unexpected source—play. This presentation will further explore the concepts of bodily experience and the role of play in healing body hatred.

Learning Objectives:
– Attendees will be  able to articulate the distinction between the subjective (lived body) and objective (corporeal) experiences of the body.
– Attendees will be able to summarize the connection between the objective experience of the body, shame and body-hatred.
– Attendees will be able to articulate the role play has in healing body shame and hatred.
– Attendees will be able to implement at least three practical clinical interventions using play in the treatment of body shame and hatred.
