Trauma and eating disorders can be closely connected, because people react to physical and emotional trauma in very individualistic ways. No two people are exactly alike in how they act, react, and cope following a traumatic event. For some people, life-affecting eating disorders and trauma are connected. The effects of trauma can be visible, or hidden very deeply in the psyche. The webinar below is very helpful in understanding the trauma and eating disorders.

Dr. Nicole Siegfried is a licensed clinical psychologist and Certified Eating Disorder Specialist. She previously served as Clinical Director for a national treatment center for eating disorders. She is currently an Adjunct Associate Professor at University of Alabama at Birmingham and has also served as Associate Professor of Psychology at Samford University. She is an international presenter in the field of eating disorders and suicidality. She is a member of AED and Co-Chair of the Suicide AED Special Interest Group. Dr. Siegfried has more than 15 years of experience working with patients with eating disorders and helping to transform their lives. She is currently working with Castlewood Treatment Center and affiliates as Clinical Director for the Highlands Treatment Center for Eating Disorders in Birmingham, AL. As the Clinical Director, Dr. Siegfried is committed to the Castlewood Philosophy of in-depth individualized treatment for the underlying symptoms and co-occurring disorders related to the eating disorder.

Cognitive Processing Therapy and Prolonged Exposure are evidence based treatments for trauma. Schema Therapy is an evidence-based therapy for complex trauma and personality disorders. Many clients with eating disorders have co-occurring trauma-related symptoms. This workshop will provide attendees with training on an intervention for trauma in eating disorders clients that integrates aspects of Cognitive Processing Therapy, Prolonged Exposure, and Schema Therapy in the treatment of trauma in eating disorders clients. Attendees will be provided with an overview of the approach and an introduction to some of the key techniques.
Learning Objectives:
Following this presentation participants will be able to:
- Describe the occurrence of trauma in eating disorders
- Define Cognitive Processing, Prolonged Exposure and Schema Therapy in the treatment of trauma in eating disorders
- Apply interventions for trauma in eating disorders
