Seekknowledge

Dear Readers,

Eating Disorders take many forms, just as physical illnesses do. Eating Disorders are misunderstood by many people, but the misunderstanding will disappear as people learn more about them. If you, or someone you know, has an eating Disorder, there is good news: all Eating Disorders can be treated. But first, you need to understand the illness– which can also be called mental disorders – and their treatment to further your understanding of mental illness.

Giving Up the Wish: Fantasy Bonds in Eating Disorder Treatment

Jim Gerber, Ph.D

Clinical Director Castlewood St. Louis

Recent research in attachment theory and neurobiology has provided information that is relevant to the significance and goals of therapy with eating disorder patients. The basis of attachment theory is that infants are “hardwired” to attach to central figures to provide the security for growth. However with misattunement, abuse or neglect, children develop strategies to compensate that then become the imprinted, enduring patterns for later relationships. While these insecure attachment strategies in themselves interfere with healthy relationships, the attachment disruptions also globally impact the child’s development. Scientific attachment patterns within eating disorder populations have been identified in research. (Crittenden, P. & Ringer, R., 2007)

The goals of the presentation are to understand present research in attachment and neurobiology as it relates to eating disorders and to describe how this informs the process of therapy with eating disorders (Crittendon, P. & Dallos, R., 2009). The focus will be on defining and describing the concept of fantasy bonds within attachment theory and how this construct evolves in clients with eating disorders. Interventions which target fantasy bonds and developing healthy attachment so as to decrease eating disorder behaviors will be discussed.

Learning Objectives:
Participants will be able to:
1. Summarize principles of attachment theory and relation of attachment theory to eating disorders.
2. Describe common attachment strategies demonstrated in clients with eating disorders and how they manifest in blocking treatment progress.
3. Implement interventions to help client understand function of eating disorder as attachment strategy and to revise maladaptive strategies so as to decrease need for eating disorder behaviors.
