“I want to recover so much! I’m so frustrated and unhappy.
I’m so afraid of being unhealthy and unhappy for the rest of
my life. Recovery is my only chance to be happy. I have to be
strong! I have to stop it! But I ‘m so afraid of gaining too
much weight, so I have to exercise every day to make sure I
will not be fat. I will drink a lot of water and keep my
food inside. I need help so badly, so I will look for a
support group I can join. They will help me to sort out my
issues”
Dear Visitors,
One of the most fantastic articles I have come across in a Long-time. This was sent to me by Karen Phillips and it’s written by Kate Walsh. This really will help you in determining the road to recovery you want to take. Also Kate Walsh gives us excellent links to Home treatment program, self help videos and recovery books.
The Right Approach To Recovery
By: Kate Walsh
It may not be so obvious for you, that how you approach recovery process (how you think about it), determines how well you are going to do.
Your recovery can be a life changing journey or disappointing and frustrating experience… Take action to make it the first one!
To help you, I illustrate 2 different approaches you may
have: one I call WRONG and the second one – RIGHT.
These are only examples, but if you understand them, you will be able to take steps that will make your own recovery successful!
— WRONG —
By wrong approach to recovery, I mean the approach where you decided you want to recover but you have no plan or treatment system to follow.
You decided that you need the help. You hope that this
decision and your will power is enough to make the change in your life. With this kind of approach you may think this way:
“I want to recover so much! I’m so frustrated and unhappy.
I’m so afraid of being unhealthy and unhappy for the rest of
my life. Recovery is my only chance to be happy. I have to be
strong! I have to stop it! But I ‘m so afraid of gaining too
much weight, so I have to exercise every day to make sure I
will not be fat. I will drink a lot of water and keep my
food inside. I need help so badly, so I will look for a
support group I can join. They will help me to sort out my
issues”
WHY THE ABOVE APPROACH IS WRONG:
From the surface, it sounds ok. There is the decision and
some determination…. But negativity and fear is in every
sentence what makes this approach “weak” from the very
beginning. Making restrictions from the very beginning
and looking for the help outside with the hope that other
people know better are signs that you don’t want to take the
the responsibility of your own life.
Also, there is no system that will support you when
you depressed, confused or relapse. Without the plan or system to follow, you will be struggling a lot.
You may give up quicker than you think…
— RIGHT —
Right approach to recovery, is based on knowledge and understanding. You understand that it won’t be straight forward path, you expect difficult moments and have plan what to do when they come.
You don’t put a pressure on yourself like “I have to recover”
and you don’t judge yourself on how you doing. You observe,
learn and try your best.
You may think this way:
“I understand and accept that I’m bulimic because of my own
choice. I was afraid of being fat, ugly, unaccepted and
alone. I didn’t understand myself and just wanted to be happy.
Bulimia was my way to cope with stress and issues in my life;
bulimia gave me the methods I needed to feel secured and in
control. But it don’t give me happiness and it won’t give it
to me in the future!
Today I can clearly see that my choice of being bulimic was wrong. Bulimia destroyed so many areas in my life I cannot even count! This is why I now choose to fight for my health and happiness. I want to learn how to accept who I am and how to love myself. My goal is my life. I need love so badly. I don’t want to live in fear all my life.
I understand that I am the only person who can really help
me. I need information and support from others in my recovery,
but I truly understand that my health is my own
responsibility.
Even though I am afraid now, I will leave my safety zone and start my recovery. I will learn about my eating disorder from different sources (experts, former bulimics, etc)
I understand and expect moments when I will feel very down
and depressed. However, I have my recovery system that will
help me even if my feelings or emotions are very low. If I
relapse I will analyse why. I will take as much time as I
need to understand this and then come back to my recovery
path. Overcoming bulimia is my constant goal. No events,
thoughts, or emotions can change it.”
WHY IS THIS APPROACH RIGHT:
– There is a treatment system/ plan as a fundament
– There are NO restrictions and pressure
– The decision about recovery is final (it is based on
understanding that without recovery, there is no health and
happiness)
– There is a desire to learn and take advice
– The responsibility is yours
SYSTEM TO FOLLOW IN RECOVERY
You may create your own recovery plan . In terms of ready treatment programs, the one I recommend is: Anorexia & Bulimia “POSITIVE ENERGY TREATMENT” by Karen
Phillips. Here is the link:
http://www.bulimiasecrets.com/ebook
This positive energy treatment program really stands out! It
is the best book on eating disorders I came across.
Real Eye Opener!
Also, and more importantly this is a home treatment,
STEP-BY-STEP program to follow that is proven to be effective
even for extremely serious cases.
Read more about it here http://bulimiasecrets.com/ebook
I believe this MUST READ EBOOK (in fact it is electronic book
you download instantly) for every bulimia and/or anorexia
sufferer.
After this book you will never look at your problems from the
same perspective. Even if you don’t follow the system, the
knowledge you get will stay with you and it will have a big
impact on your actions in the future. It will probably a mile
stone for your recovery 🙂
