Allah reveals food as his divine blessing which people should consume through acts of
gratitude. Eating exists to both provide bodily sustenance for worship and righteous deed
practice. In Surah Al-Araf (7:31), Allah commands:;O children of Adam! Each mosque welcomes you to wear your best appearance while you also
consume food and beverages yet practice moderation.”

Spirituality of Eating

Review: by Mayar Assaf
Human beings depend on food to survive, but Islam regards eating as an act profoundly tied to
spiritual and divine teachings. According to Muslim teachings, as presented in the Quran and
through Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), eating requires both respect and ethical
behavior. When believers understand the spiritual elements of consumption, they build their
bond with Allah and achieve life equilibrium. Eating in Islamic tradition fulfils multiple spiritual purposes.

The verse states that God does not like those individuals who engage in unwarranted overeating.
The verse shows believers that they must practice restraint in their food consumption because
excessive eating affects them physically and spiritually. Self-discipline emerges as a lesson from
this approach while teaching believers how to eat in a balanced manner.

The Etiquette of Eating: A Sunnah Approach
The proper rules for eating were established by The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)
through his teaching about Muslim hunger etiquette.
All praise is due to Allah closing the meal after beginning with In the name of Allah at its
start.
Muslims must eat with their right hand while they distribute their food to those around
them.
Surah Al-Isra states that people who waste their food have devils as their blood brothers
(17:27).
Believers who adopt these religious practices ensure their eating customs match their
religious and prayerful beliefs.
Conclusion:
Nourishing the Body and Soul
Islam views eating beyond basic sustenance because it provides worshippers with the
possibility to sense appreciation while staying alert and adopting ethical behaviors. Muslims
sanctify their meals when they eat only lawful and pure food while avoiding excessive
consumption and maintaining proper eating habits thus transforming all their meals into prayers.
The Islamic teachings present a complete system of food that maintains the health of both
biological needs and spiritual needs.
