Body image arises when individual becomes more aware to the self into a competitive manner.
In traditional times, bulky and high weights in women were considered as attractive and in this manner, the only thing women were consciously doing was to work on their hair, skin, wearing accessories etc but not losing weight until health problems arises whereas low weight women used to stabilise their diet in eating healthy. All in all, body image was discriminate in terms of health as healthy is attractive but today in modern society where media has a basic role in developing the bias into the minds of women has created a new body image discrimination base upon “model look” which itself is modern phenomenon not traditional.

Dear Readers,

Please find below an opinion piece for our Wednesday session on Body Image. This response was submitted by Sufistix. She’s one of our long time supporters and friend. We thank her from bottom of our heart for all her support and love.

We’ve received a very great response to our #NEDAwareness Week topics. You can view our highlights by clicking here.

A pure phenomenon is always independent of two things, personal intellectual and societal bias.
Societies are based upon communities where living together is the first and foremost conditions in building societies.
Broken societies arises when togetherness started shattering which also is pointed by Ibn e Khaldun in his book Muqadama where he said that, solidarity is the basic principle for living societies,  when solidarity declines, society decline.
Traditional women used to drink milk with, eat meat, whole wheat and all healthy stuff in order to look beautiful in clothes she wear not in order to look clothes beautiful on her which is a concept in “model look” when they say,
*the dress looks good on you* not that *you look good in the dress* ..
And this comes to the point that,
” _The media in particular, has increasingly become a platform that reinforces cultural beliefs and projects strong views on how we should look, that we as individuals often unknowingly or knowingly validate and perpetuate._ “
Media is promoting model look in order to promote their products on human in a competitive modern market system.
Whereas increasing rate of individualism also causes more consciousness towards the self and less to the overall wellbeing of the entire selves.
When one narrow down their focus to only the self, the amount of wellbeing that they earn also narrowed down towards the self so when one comes into the competitive world where self is more focused than the selves, whatever the final product will be , it will never get enough from the refinement procedure more until accepted but into the competitions, competitors never appreciates eachother rather they always critique.
So mo matter how much one acquires, the competition with the self never finishes as in individualism the competition is also again with the self.
And hence come to the third point which says,
” _The more we look at perfect images of others and then look to find those same idealised characteristics in ourselves and don’t find them, the worse we feel about ourselves._”
Its true because ideal types always sets a new goal as far as competition lies within, it never sets on one goal, it changes through refinement procedure until it gets finished.
So what basically one has to do is to simply come out of the self and to live in the world of the selves where health is priority then it is the fashion or model look.
When one comes to live in solidarity with others in building society then the focus from the self starts diminishing and the focus on the health starts developing more because it concerns the whole society so the basic answer is to broaden one’s focus, to not diminish only into the self will help reducing “body image consciousness” in people.
