When brain calls for certain food specially junk food people get cravings, though they know that this food is unhealthy they can’t control themselves. It is as difficult to control as people mostly get addiction of drugs. Food addiction is similar to other brain eating disorders like bulimia and several other overeating disorders. Many countries are taking action against junk food by banning their advertisement from schools and children programs.

Definition:

Junk food is also known as fast food which can be made easily and also their eating and drinking is easy. In 1972, It is defined by Michael Jacobson as slang for such type of food having low quality in nutrition. He also called them HFSS means high fat, sugar or salt.

History of Junk Food:

In the transition of 20th century, junk food arises from America as fragment of their culture that is ever-spreading. In start of 20th century, hamburger was sold in parks, parties and in entertaining activities, where this is not considered as junk food. Kentucky Fried Chicken fast food outlet, it is the heading of junk food. In southern America, this food is considered as part of their tradition. Junk food include cupcakes, candies, soft drinks, pizzas, white bread, fried food, pastries, French fries, potato chips and many more.

Many countries are taking action against junk food by banning their advertisement from schools and children programs.

What to do to stop eating junk food

  • Do most of your shopping at the periphery of the store.
  • Look for fresh products – the less processed, the better.
  • Read the ingredients on labels.
  • Stay away from nutri-garbage
  • Beware of the “Dirty Dozen“ (sprayed fruits and vegetables).

Harmful Effects of junk food:

Popularity of Junk food is increasing due to its advertising. But they have zero nutrition, low energy and high level of cholesterol. They cause many harms to the body as it causes many types cancers of skin, obesity, Heart diseases and diabetes.

  1. Junk food and obesity

High and abnormal level of fat accumulation that cause the risk of heart diseases, many chronic diseases, diabetes and cancer is known as and Obesity & overweight, according to WHO. Adipocytes are expended due to accumulation of fat and adipogenesis due to the result of energy imbalances. Less physical activity and intake of high level of calories contributed to obesity.

Insulin resistance in hepatocytes of obese patients is due to level of lipid and palmitate lipotoxicity. High level of lipid in blood due to high consumption of fatty diet lead to atherosclerosis. But by reducing the weight, various disorders of health are improved mainly heart diseases.

  1. Diabetes due to junk food

As a result of obesity and insulin resistance, chances of diabetes increased up to 20%. A lot of physical activities and a diguanide along with agents that cause the high level of circulating insulin to reduce insulin resistance are the treatments of diabetes. Monoglycerides, iron and artificial sweeteners are 3 initial agents that were studied in lab and it was found that they cause the secretion of insulin to increase at basal glucose by producing ROS; for example, peroxides, super oxides, nitric oxides. ROS have direct effect on insulin secretion.

  1. Junk food leads to heart failure

Though there is little information about the effects of carbohydrates composition and dietary fats on development of heart failure directly. But cardiac failure co-related with hypertension and obesity. In the end of last century, it was observed that consumption of saturated fats and carbohydrates (highly processed), such as white potatoes, sugar, white flour increased the risk of obesity in western societies.

 

There are several problems that occurs due to junk food. Islam, a divine religion, always teaches us moderation. Using balance, healthy and fresh diet help us to stay away from several complications.
