A wound calls for us to recognize the hurt, to face the pain. Our honest expression gets the hurt out in the open, into the light, out of the darkness.

No matter how hard your heart seems to be broken, there’s a time and a place where you recognize the unbreakable nature of your soul. What we see and feel as broken merely is a call for correction.

We learn and evolve through healing, and we learn that what’s true for us now is offering us a chance to become reacquainted with another truth, the real truth of who we are.

The healing process affords us the opportunity to realize that we are far from being alone in the world.

Health Risks of Bulimia and 5 Tips to Avoid them

shaye boddington

I pushed the health risks of bulimia to the back of my mind for years on end. I thought I was too strong and too young to experience them…

But after suffering from bulimia for over 10 years, my body began to say ‘enough‘…

Bleeding Mouth Sores

First of all, I started getting these awful mouth sores…

Painful, bleeding and cracked wounds in the corner of my mouth. They hurt like hell. And despite how badly they hurt, I still could not stop bingeing and purging… Delaying their healing process even further.

Rotten Teeth

After the mouth sores, came my rotten teeth…

I never knew how protect my teeth from the acid in my vomit – and it showed. Learning that it was going to cost at least $6000 to fix my teeth made me feel weak the the knees. Bye bye to the deposit I was saving for my house.

Bloating, Constipation and reflux

Mouth sores and rotten teeth were quickly followed by digestive problems…

Even if I tried to digest something, it seemed impossible. If I went to bed without purging, I’d have to sleep sitting upright – or else the food would just come back up. Bloating, constipation, acid reflux… these were all signs that my poor digestive system was not happy.

Deadly Electrolyte Imbalances

And after all of those uncomfortable bulimia side effects, came one of the scariest health risks of bulimia… Electrolyte imbalances

Having the correct balance of electrolytes is critical so that our muscles and nerves function properly. My poor heart muscle became incredibly stressed from the imbalances in my body…

At times my low levels of potassium made me feel like I was paralyzed. My heart was exhausted to the point that I could hardly move.

How to Protect your skin, teeth, digestive system and heart from the health risks of bulimia

Take Supplements to Protect Your Skin

Bulimia causes malnutrition – and it’s this malnutrition that causes so many of the health risks of bulimia. Being malnourished is what caused the bleeding sores I used to get beside my mouth. I also used to suffer from dry skin and hair, and gray bags around my eyes.

To look after your skin, hair and many other parts of your body, it’s important to take a good quality supplement. I say good quality because not all supplements are created equal… Some do pretty much nothing. Your best bet is to visit a naturopath and ask them prescribe some to you.

Simple Steps to Protect Your Teeth

You know that burning feeling after you purge?

Or that feeling the next morning when your mouth feels like it’s being eaten away by acid?

That’s because of the acid that gets forced from your stomach into your mouth after purging. It’s strong stuff – strong enough to wear away the protective enamel on our teeth.

Don’t make my mistake and just accept this side effects of bulimia. Do what you can to protect your teeth and save yourself plenty of money and discomfort. Here are some tips on protecting your teeth from bulimia:

  • Don’t brush your teeth right after purging, this will cause more damage to the enamel
  • Use toothpaste high in fluoride
  • Floss twice a day and try to keep as much time between purging and flossing as possible
  • Alkalize the acid in your mouth after purging by rinsing with a mixture of baking soda and water

NOTE: Just recently Suze who is a member of my online Bulimia Recovery Program commented in the private forums… She said that her dentist suggested a product called Tooth Mousse. Here’s what she had to say:

Tooth Mousse has saved my teeth – you can get it on Amazon (not given away, but really worth it). After my dentist often commenting on my very poor enamel, I knew I was in for some major work in time…Then I moved abroad and the dentist gave me tooth moose, which basically ‘puts enamel back into your teeth’ – it is a paste but also comes as gum. Two yrs later and back in the UK to my dentist here, and the 1st thing she said was ‘wow. you must have given up on fizzy drinks – teeth looking strong!’. So…sadly I have not left bulimia behind me yet (oh how I will!) but I always use tooth moose…..and whilst I have more fillings than I would have hoped for, nothing more dramatic than that…after a good 15 yrs of pouring gut acid over them….ugh..”

Damaged bulimia teeth are one of the long term effects of bulimia – so please, do your best to prevent them. Below are some photos of my teeth now, after a lot of money spend on fixing them:

Eat These Foods to Protect Your Digestive System

Bulimia assassinates the good guys in your digestive system. By the good guys, I’m talking about healthy stomach bacteria…

When this good bacteria is low, it can cause a number of uncomfortable and embarrassing side effects… Bloating, belching and farting just to name a few. It can also cause a prolonged feeling of fullness after eating – which I know I had, big time!

Luckily, there are some foods that are jam packed with healthy bacteria. Some of these foods are:

  • Kefir
  • Sauerkraut
  • Kombucha
  • Yoghurt

Be suspicious of anything you buy from a general grocery store. Often it’s heat treated and all the good guys have been killed. The best idea is to make your own…

Kefir is especially easy to make.. You simply mix Kefir Grains with coconut milk or normal milk and cover it up for a day or two. There are plenty of tutorials on the internet 🙂

Replenish Your Electrolytes to Keep Your Heart Safe

Electrolyte imbalances can cause heart attacks. Probably the most serious of all the health risks of bulimia. But rather than feeling down about it – take action! Start adding this bulimia recovery smoothie into each and every day.

Do your best to keep it down so that all those awesome electrolytes have the chance to absorb into your body to keep you safe. Watch my video below for more info on this smoothie.

You Will Survive Bulimia!

When I look back on my years of bulimia, I’m surprised that I made it. I’m surprised that I am alive to write this right now. I never took enough precaution to keep myself healthy and strong… You will not make this mistake – will you?

Look after yourself by following the suggestions above. Begin treating that amazing body of yours with love and care.

If you are already walking the journey of recovery, then you are doing amazing things for your health. If you haven’t started your journey yet, there is no better time than now 🙂

You could:

  • Find a local therapist who specializes in bulimia treatment
