How to Cure Your Eating Disorder with the power of Neuroplasticity:  Lesson 3

Dear Readers!

Please find below Lesson 3 from Dr Irina Webster on curing your Eating Disorder with the help of Neuroplasticity. Happy Reading!

Welcome to lesson 3 :

Why it works so well. Neuroplasticity works so well because you are using the human brains natural ability to change: everyone has this ability. There is not a single person in the world whose brain structure can’t be changed by the power of neuroplasticity. But what about genes I hear some of you say: “What about genetic predisposition to disease and disorders?” Yes, genetics plays a role but our genes have two kinds of fundamental properties. One of them is something that is not under our control: well it’s not in our control at all; these are the genes we were born with. We all were born with a set of certain genes which have the ability to replicate themselves: nothing much at this point we can do about that but the other aspect we certainly can… On the other hand, it is certain that human genetic inheritance includes plasticity. Or to say in other words, neuroplasticity (our ability to change our brain structure) is also in our genetic makeup for all human beings.

The other interesting aspect of genes is they’re turned on and off all the time by our brain. When you go to sleep some are turned on and others are turned off and when you wake in the morning other switches are thrown on and others off. But it turns out that our thoughts can also throw these switches on or off and this gives us a lot more control when we know how to do this consciously.

You see we are not aware of all these genes switching on and off as they are at the subconscious level: interestingly the same level that your eating disorder lives. Some feelings and behaviours can turn some of our genes on and switch some off: an eating disorder is a great example of this. Bad feelings of insecurity, fear and sadness turn the switches on and significant improvement in self-esteem and general happiness turn some genetic switches off. This is the same with behaviour – the more you behave like an anorexic or bulimic the more you want to continue. So if you continue to lock yourself in with bad emotions there is little chance for you to beat your eating disorder.

Remember the more you try to improve – the easier it becomes. Conclusion: Just because someone has a predisposition to an eating disorder does not mean they are doomed to a life of battling an ED. As we have explained in the lessons you can change your brain with the correct thoughts.

Positive thoughts change you for the better: Negative thoughts change you for the worse.

If you want to get rid of your eating disorder you must change your whole focus. When the urge to starve yourself or go for that 10 mile run, over use laxatives or binge and purge hits, then stop and realise what you are doing. Realise that it is a bunch of faulty neurons and mixed up chemicals in your brain: it is not really you. Once you do then you can say to yourself “hey I am not going to give into a bunch of electrical impulses” then turn around and go do something else. In my new book “Cure Your Eating Disorder: 5 Step Program to Change Your Brain. Neuroplasticity Approach.” I described everything I know about neuroplasticity and eating disorders and how exactly you can help yourself using neuroplasticity.
