A Recipe of Love and Healing: Nadia’s Basil Salad

“Whenever we can manage to love without

we are indeed in heaven.”

~ Rumi

Dear Readers,

In Sickness, Love is the Most Powerful Healing Energy.

It is with deep honour and deep love, I share this  recipe with you from the heartland of Arabia by Saudi Mystical Poetess Ni’mah Ismail Nawwab. This Recipe is named after a person who is going through some difficult times with her Eating Disorder. I’ve never come across such a beautiful gesture before. When I received Ni’mah’s Email, I simply sat there with tears in my eyes, because I finally found  someone who said what I have been trying to say for years!   Love is a greatest therapy of all times and can cure any ailment.  This simple gesture of love and care gave a glimmer of hope to a sufferer to  fight for her survival.  This Salad has many healing loving properties, it includes ingredients from the kitchen of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). Good health is the aliveness, and Eating this salad made with Mahaba Love will surely enrich one’s mind, body and spirit.

Background Story:

This recipe was created at the wee hours of the night, when moon was still traversing the sky, slightly hovering on the Meccan Sky, peeking through the trees on a balmy Summer night. It’s a month of Sha’ban, a month right before Ramadan and Dawn was mere twinkling hours away.

At that captivating time of the night, Ni’mah ventured into her garden, collected ingredients without any plans and created this fusion. She then named it after a sufferer and sent recipe to her as a symbol of her love.

“The best way to start putting love in our lives is to start giving Love”.

Matthew Manning

It made a difference to the sufferer. Her eyes lit up and her heart turned all warm with healing power of love. Her invisible suffering and pain eased. This showed me as a person watching from third person’s perspective, Love has infinite power to uplift people from depths of their suffering. It has a power to soothe and heal. Love cannot be bought and Love doesn’t cost money. Love is simply there inside all of us, for us to give. This recipe is a testimony of Love. This Ramadan, why not create a recipe for your loved one?  Tell them you created this recipe out of love for them. Tell them about the healing properties of the recipe and how you believe eating it will nourish their body, enrich their mind and nurture their soul . That’s all you have to do and watch the joy of spreading love.

And the earth hath He appointed for His creatures
Wherein are fruit and sheathed palm trees,
Husked grain and scented herb.
Which is it of these favors of your Lord
that ye deny? Qur’an 55:10-13

The Salad Contains Two Main Healing Ingredients from the Kitchen of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh):

Basil, Sweet (rayhan)–It strengthens the heart.  Sleep is promoted by rubbing the head with basil and water.

Health Benefits of Basil

  • Anti-adhesion Basil has been shown to make platelets, a component of red blood cells, less “sticky”- a process that may reduce the chance of blood clots forming.
  • Immune Response A study showed that rats that were given a particular variety of basil, holy basil, had decreases in immune responses to allergens.
  • Antibacterial Properties Oil of basil has demonstrated strong antibacterial properties, even with antibiotic-resistant types. It has been found particularly effective in killing harmful bacteria found in produce.

Olive Oil (zaytun) A marvelous nutrient

“And a tree that grows out of Mount Sinai which produces oil and a condiment for those who eat. For olive oil is the supreme seasoning.” (Qur’an 24:35).

  4. My mum thinks this is a great idea. My sister is in hospital for her eating disorder. it just makes me very sad, how we can never make her happy. it doesn’t matter how much we try, she’s always upset with us. my mum can never do anything right, my dad can never do anything right. Last night she yelled at all of us so much. She thought my parents were putting things in her food to make her fat. I wish she would stop. it’s making everyone at home very unhappy. she gets so jealous when we have pizza. I wish she would let us live our lives and not try to control us all the time.

  5. I have not seen a more delicious type of food in the last couple of months to be honest . Thank you Maha for posting this healthy and wonderful recipe !!
