Few weeks back I attended a course on ‘Healing Foods for the Later Years’ at the ION (Institute of Optimum Nutrition) in Richmond, Surrey. This was “A vibrant, practical workshop exploring the science and traditions behind foods used to support healthy ageing.”
My reason for attending this workshop was to gain knowledge on foods that will help to aid in recovery from Eating Disorder. We all know how Eating Disorder plays havoc on one’s body and mind. This is all due to lack of nutrients in the body and abuse of nutrition. I remember the meals at the Eating Disorder unit and how they made me feel so confused and nervous afterwards. I thought what if we were given something that was very high in nutritional value, had numerous health benefits and would provide us with a motivation to eat and to eat for healthy body mind and soul. I would look at the dish of Mac and Cheese and think how is this going to aid in my recovery?
Good nutrition is essential for healing from Eating Disorder. I still remember how two years back, I was having this raspberry and papaya smoothie and within days, I could feel the positive affects on my skin. My skin was glowing and it just made me feel so good about myself.
Healing Foods for the Later Years/Eating Disorder Recovery
The workshop discussed the role of foods to support healthy mind, body and spirit. The ingredients used were raw, organic and close to nature. The key aim was to focus upon foods that help to aid digestion, circulation, stimulation and reduce inflammation. When you’re recovering from Eating Disorder, one of the key problems is indigestion and inflammation. I believe that if you incorporate good nutrition in your daily diet then you will be well on your way to defeat the demon of Eating Disorder. Trust me good nutrition is a key to beating all illnesses in the world. Balanced diet and proper nutrition gives the body what it needs to create new tissue while keeping your immune system strong.
In this workshop I came to my own analysis and conclusion that getting the proper nutrients can help you heal faster and more efficiently from your Eating Disorder.
The Workshop examined:
Nutritional of common medications, including common contraindications and nutrient depletion.**
Benefits of different methods of food preparation, taking into consideration nutrient bioavailability, companion foods, energetic properties, seasonality and taste!**
Case studies to explore individual cases and differing circumstances, including nutritional support during hospital stays.**
Demonstrations of simple food preparation and everyone was invited to sample and try their hand at making fresh juices, smoothies, nut milks, tisanes, pates and fermented foods.** (Yum)
This brilliant workshop was delivered by Belinda and Nicola: both are real foodies and share a passion about bringing real food back into the kitchen. They have long been fascinated by the traditions behind the use of foods for healing and so their workshops not only embrace the science that helps us to understand their properties, but also this rich anecdotal history.**

Healing Drinks –anti-inflammatory/good digestion/natural diuretic/ immune booster
Two of my favorite healing drinks from the Workshop. Make them part of your diet, and people will be stopping you and asking you about the secret to your good skin and glowing health. Beware you will have a very increased stamina and energy!
Uno Numero – This heart warmer supports good digestion & detoxification & circulation / anti-inflammatory / warming. What was shocking about this drink was the use of fresh turmeric. In Asian culture turmeric is one of the key vital ingredients in cooking. It just made me so proud of my mother for adding turmeric to our dishes. Fresh Turmeric is beautiful, smells wonderful and is great for vitality and healthy living.
1 pineapple, peeled and chopped- In recovery from Eating Disorder, Pineapple is a key brain booster food. This was used by Karen Phillips ‘Mom Please Help’ to boost her daughter’s brain cells.
2 whole lemons, unwaxed and cut into quarters-
Simple Magic. Supports your digestive health, builds your immune system and detoxifies your body.
2-4cm piece ginger root, peeled-
Ginger is another magical food in recovery from Eating Disorder- Indian proverb”everything good can be found in ginger.“ It supports cardiovascular health, supports your immune system and helps your body to heal faster from all the damage.
2 cm piece of turmeric root- Just a few grams of turmeric per day either in the form of powder, crushed root or fresh root can provide enough nutrients to help you keep away from hundreds of health problems.
- Put all the ingredients through a juicer and enjoy straight away as vibrant aperitif!
- Add 1 teaspoon of Rice Bran Oil (tasteless) and a grinding of black pepper to aid the absorption of the curcumin in the turmeric.
Cranberry & Lemon Barley Water
Makes ¾ litre
refreshing / soothing / anti-inflammatory / may help prevent urinary-tract infections
2lemons, large and unwaxed
300g barley (ideally hulled or pot)(rinsed well in cold water)- The Prophet (saws) recommended Barley to cure grief’s of heart and ailments of kidney. Barley is a soluble fibre, It’s cooling, anti-inflammatory and acts as a diuretic.
2.5 litres water
4tbs cranberry juice-
(adjust quantities to taste)
- Put the barley in a large saucepan with the water and bring to the boil. Remove any scum that rises to the surface. Simmer for 20 minutes.
- Use a potato peeler to remove the zest from the lemon and stir into the barley water.
Leave to cool.
- Strain off the barley and the lemon zest and add the juice of 1 whole lemon and 4tbs of cranberry juice. Chill in the fridge until required.
Barley water is also delicious made with fresh ginger or flavoured with other fresh fruit juices.
