Eating Disorder is a horrible illness that becomes so passionate in a persons life that it soon affects everyone around them.  With this mental illness, so many people give  up hope of recovery. They think it’s safer to submit to the demands of the demon of eating disorder then to fight it. One such person is from the Salt City and she has lived with bulimia for thirteen years now. After so many failed treatments, she said that she believes it’s God’s will for her to live with this illness. Let me clarify something again, Eating Disorders are not God’s will. Allah loves us and will never afflict us with a hardship or an illness that has no cure. In Islam, “there is cure for every disease except death”.

I have never been through anything quite as deep, or frankly, personally frightening as my Eating Disorder. I remember falling into a state of sheer melancholy and losing all hope of recovery. It was then that I came to know about the power of Surah al- Duhua (the morning light), 93 chapter of the Qur’an. It was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) when he was facing enormous hardship in his life. There was a period of time in which no revelation came to him and Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) became sad.  So Allah consoled him and revealed to him in this beautiful Surah :

“By the morning light, and the night when it settles, your Lord has not forsaken you, nor does He hate you”

Surah al-Dhuha assures Allah’s pleasure in Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) and glorious rewards that will follow. Allah consoles our beloved Prophet Muhammad (pbuh)  “And surely what comes after is better for you than that which has gone before.”[Duha 93:4].

Regardless of what Eating Disorder an individual is suffering from they will Inshallah find that Surah Duhua is a very important component of the recovery, especially if an individual is starting to lose hope.

Remember Eating Disorder lies, manipulates and deceives, but God doesn’t.

Recovery from an Eating Disorder is one long hard testing journey. It is full of trials tribulations and suffering. Don’t ever lose the hope of recovery. After every hardship comes ease. Inshallah by including Qur’an in a recovery program it will increase your chances at sustained recovery. The treatment of the ED involves some form of behavior modification and what a best way to aid your recovery then Qur’an and Salah? Praying and reciting Qur’an aids recovery as it puts you in God’s care.
